Whether you’ve been affected by the current pandemic indirectly or directly, there are many people all over the world feeling the grips of panic and stress due to COVID-19.

No doubt, being away from friends and loved ones can be extremely taxing. Not only is it life-saving but looking further on the bright side of things, social distancing has rendered more time for focusing on some of the things we often ignore. As we do our part in helping to reduce the spread in our communities, it’s important to be attentive to how our minds and bodies feel.

Now, more than ever is a great time to get aligned with your mental and physical health and adding CBD in your self-care arsenal just might be what you need.

But, First — What’s CBD?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol is one of the hundreds of chemical compounds scientists call ‘cannabinoids’ mainly found in the hemp plant.

Unlike the well-known THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is non-psychoactive and will not cause that “high” feeling normally associated with marijuana. Instead, the therapeutic cannabinoid is praised for its wide array of medicinal uses including calming pain and inflammation. It also assists in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and even more severe health conditions such as PTSD, insomnia, and appetite loss to name a few. Below are a some ways you can use CBD to help cope while in quarantine.

Sublinguals: CBD can be taken in the form of an oil. If you’re feeling on edge, place a few drops of CBD oil under the tongue and hold for 60 seconds. This delivery method allows the oil to be absorbed in the blood through your capillaries, with effects felt in as little as 15-20 minutes.

Topicals: CBD topicals come in a variety of products including bath bombs, lotions, face serums — even lubricants. Mainly used for localized delivery, applying CBD topically can help target pain at the source after that intense at-home cardio Youtube session or while working on your laptop. Expect pain relief in around 20-30 minutes.

Ingestibles: Be it capsules, edibles, or sprays, there are a number of ways to experience tranquility using this CBD delivery method. Some products are made to help combat anxiety on the spot, while others were made with a proprietary blend of CBD and other plant-based ingredients to promote a good night’s rest or naturally increase energy when you need it.

Flower: Hemp-derived CBD strain is perhaps the most popular method — and for good reason too. Effects are felt almost immediately, offering up to 4-6 hours of relief (in my experience at least). Certainly, you can smoke it, but vaping is the safest and healthiest way to consume via inhalation. Pro tip: if you don’t own a vape, purchase hemp wick to avoid combustion and allow a slower burn of your medicinal nugs.

So, How Much CBD Should I Take?

CBD is a personal experience — meaning it will affect everybody differently. Though it would make life much easier to have a universal CBD dose, it simply doesn’t work like that; CBD consumption is based on various factors, biological and not. Because of this, finding the perfect dose may take some experimentation.

Coming from a longtime consumer, CBD newbies should start with a low dose. From there, gradually increase until you feel the desired effects. Studies have shown that CBD doses of anywhere from 20mg and 1,500mg per day are safe for consumption. If you feel nothing after your first dosage, you may take a second dose or larger dose without. CBD is non-toxic and doesn’t possess any overdose, addiction, or withdrawal potential so you don’t have to worry about putting your health at risk.

Though nature’s CBD is the latest in wellness, we must remember that there is still much more to discover. Before trying CBD, be sure to speak with your primary health care provider to see what best suits your needs.
