#TheGlowUp is completely all-encompassing and it’s so much more than a hashtag, it is our experience and it is what we strive for.  For me, it always connects back to how well we nurture our skin and body to have that natural, lit from within, radiant next-level glow that can only be achieved through inner to outer balance. Now that we are all quarantined, this is a great time to focus on building healthy habits that enhance our self-care and help our skin thrive!

Everything is connected, but as it relates to your skin, your gut health plays an integral role in your skin health.  Your gut controls about 70 percent of your body’s immune system if things start to feel out of whack you can almost guarantee it will show up on your face as your skin is your largest organ.  If you have a dull complexion, skin dryness, or experience consistent breakouts and acne, a lot of this can be tied to your gut, as your skin is typically a reflection or barometer for what is going on inside.  You may notice that when you are experiencing stress or anxiety, that manifests as some sort of flare-up on your skin as well.  Having a balanced healthy gut is critical to gaining control over your skin.

Inflammation is the main skin predator when we experience skin concerns like acne, eczema, and hyperpigmentation that is linked to inflammation of the skin which can likely be tied to inflammation of the gut.  It is so important to have a healthy diet and feed your body the things that nourish it.  Foods that are great for the gut and focus on reducing inflammation are kombucha, fermented foods like yogurt, and fiber-rich green vegetables.  Fiber allows your gut to create anti-inflammatory compounds that stimulate immune health, a healthy and balanced immune system contributes to healthy and balanced skin. Natural ingredients like turmeric, purslane, honey, and green tea also when consumed or applied topically can reduce inflammation in the skin and body.

A quick tip: Start every morning with a glass of water and fresh lemon, not only does this help stimulate your digestion, but this will also help your body rid toxins and impurities which is excellent for your skin and pores.  Impurities and toxins can cause build-up in your pores, pore congestion leads to inflammation which comes to life in the form of acne and blemishes.  Additionally, lemons are packed with vitamin c, vitamin c helps to enhance your complexion and has natural anti-aging properties.  To top it all off, water is a hydrator, hydrated skin automatically functions better than dry skin.

I personally love probiotics and take them daily, they are perfect for the gut, I especially love those from brands like Seed, HUM, and Tula Skincare. There are so many benefits to probiotics from contributing to digestive balance, to supporting and strengthening the immune system and ultimately promoting healthy skin. One of my favorite skincare brands Tula makes topical probiotic products as well that are super effective for achieving a glowing complexion, ridding breakouts, and reducing irritation and inflammation to the skin.

Outer glow can be achieved through a range of skincare products, but the most important ones are products with vitamin c, exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs/PHAs), and niacinamide ingredients.  Vitamin c products help to even the complexion and brighten dark spots, exfoliating acids help to accelerate the cellular turnover process (revealing a new layer of clear skin / ridding the surface damaged layer) and even the skin texture, and niacinamide products help unclog + tighten pores and lessen the occurrence of breakouts.  These ingredients are critical in obtaining a glowing and even-toned complexion.

Outer glow also requires a disciplined and consistent skincare routine. Skin concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne, ongoing and connected skin conditions, can take months to see results and to gain control over.  The best and fastest results will come from consistent daily use, quality skin-loving products, and efficacious ingredients. The combination of having a consistent inner and an outer glow routine makes for the ultimate Glow Up, as each one enhances the other!

The main function of Vitamin C is to even and brighten the complexion if you struggle with dull complexion, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation or acne marks, this is your skin’s best friend!  Vitamin C products are best in the forms of serums and concentrates as well as scrubs (physical exfoliators). Some of my favorites include Hyper Clear Vitamin C Serum (#blackowned), Tatcha Violet C Brightening Serum, and Acure Brightening Scrub.

Chemical Exfoliating Acids mainly help with cellular turnover, the break down dead and damaged skin cells on the surface to bring new, fresh, and healthy skin to the forefront. Some of my go-to favorites include Farmacy Beauty Glow AHA Night Serum, Bolden Brightening Glycolic Acid Toner (#blackowned), and Tula Pro-Glycolic Resurfacing Toner. *use code BUYMECHANEL for 15% off

Niacinamide products help minimize the overproduction of oil / sebum reducing shine, reduce enlarged pores, and lower the occurrence of breakouts. The two that come to mind for me are Paula’s Choice Niacinamide Treatment and The Ordinary’s High-Strength Vitamin and Mineral Blemish Formula.
