DRK Beauty aims to give away 10,000 hours of free therapy to women of color in the U.S. affected by COVID-19
The need for mental health support in communities of color is real and the time to act is NOW!
NEW YORK, NY, May 20, 2020 – DRK Beauty, recently founded by Wilma Mae Basta and Co-Founder Danielle Jackson, is a digital content and community platform missioned to support, celebrate and empower those who identify as women of color. In line with this mission, DRK Beauty launched DRK Beauty Healing, a mental health initiative dedicated to providing 10,000 hours of free therapy to women of color in the U.S. affected by COVID-19. DRK Beauty is encouraging:
1. Licensed therapists to donate 10+ hours of free therapy by signing up online; and
2. Women of color in need of immediate mental health support to visit our directory of clinicians who have donated their hours and connect with a local therapist.
Access to both the clinician sign up form and directory of clinicians is available on our DRK Beauty website: www.thisisdrkbeauty/drk-healing.
The time to act is now as the mental health fallout from the impact of COVID-19 is devastating communities of color in the United States who are presently and disproportionately affected by the virus. Structural and interpersonal racism will only worsen existing inequities for these communities. DRK Beauty has begun mobilizing efforts to break this vicious cycle that we witnessed with the H1N1 outbreak in 2009.
“The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on black and brown communities is creating a mental health disaster that will carry on for generations to come. Current mental health support for women of color is frankly not enough. So we decided to launch this initiative which is already providing much-needed help in our community.” – Wilma Mae Basta, Founder & CEO, DRK Beauty
Since its launch on May 15, 2020, the DRK Beauty Healing initiative continues to raise therapy time until 10,000 hours have been achieved. Mental Health America has publicly supported the initiative on social media as well as several high-profile influencers such as Lala Anthony, Jessica Garcia, Alisha Boe, Indya Moore and Denise Bidot.
